Railway Operator “Chave na Mão” Application

There is a process known as a “maneuver” that takes place in the loading and unloading yards, like those in Santos and Paranaguá (Brazil). These maneuvers are planned at the Rail Yard Control Center (in Portuguese, CCP) by the operators and are communicated via radio for the field team (machinists and maneuverers).
1. Optimize communications between CCP/maneuverer/machinist, replacing radio – communication with an application;
2. Increase the visibility of the real-time process;
3. Access field data to assist in future analysis and process optimizations.
“The biggest challenge from the business’ point of view was to understand the customer needs to find the best way to replace the radio communication.”
– Daniel Bastos – Scrum Master
For the application development, a dedicated team of six employees from Cinq worked using the Agile Method and Scrum Framework, seeking closer communication with the client and better visibility of the project’s progress.
“Cinq’s working mode is dynamic and therefore, every delivery we saw what the team had developed and tested. With Cinq, we had agility in identifying the situation and we worked together to reach the best solution proposal.”
– Rafael Pinto – Product Owner
A UX (User Experience) project was developed by the team’s designer for achieving Rumo’s objective to replace the radio by the “Chave na mão” app. This phase was essential to the success of the project. The team was able to understand and identify the user’s journey and think about Interface solutions that were ideal both from the design standpoint and from the technology used.
“At Cinq, we include the user experience from the beginning of the project; it is common for designers to be present for surveying user stories with customers, helping to understand the user’s challenges and co-creating a solution. User Journey mappings and field visits are also used to understand all the contexts of use of the future product or service.”
– Raquel Prado–Usability Analyst
During the project, the team identified functionalities that could delay the delivery of the system. Backlog refinements were made with the Product Owner.
“Using the Scrum framework allows us to change the project’s scope, adapting deliveries according to the customer’s needs and the team’s perception and learning during sprints”.
– Daniel Bastos – Scrum Master
The biggest technical challenge of the solution was to work with legacy software, which would be integrated with the application with Oracle SOA technology.
“Cinq already knew the technology and we could rely on its support for maintenance, even our operations running 24 hours a day.”
– Rafael Pinto – Product Owner
Today, the maneuver planning team can visualize in real time the team’s field location, and the communication among the machinists and the railway yard Control Center has been optimized. Rumo also maintains a database of what happens in the maneuvers to make future strategic decisions.
